CAPSULE REVIEW –– This is certainly Hitchcock's most beautifully shot film and his only straight romance. Sure, there's suspense, but TO CATCH A THIEF is more about the lovely location (the French Riviera), the clothes and the love between a spoiled American heiress and a wanted jewel thief nicknamed The Cat. Grant never looked more tan, fit or comfortable. All he has to do here is look handsome, be charming, fall for the girl and solve a quaint little mystery. Things he could do in his sleep. Kelly doesn't have much more to do than Grant. Her main job here is to entice him to love her. With those icy blue eyes and sophisticated style, what man would refuse her charms? Grant tries his best, especially after she accuses him of stealing her mother's diamonds. He is, after all, an infamous thief for whom expensive jewels are supposedly irresistible. In the wake of a rash of new burglaries, he's having a hard time living that reputation down with the police and his old resistance compadres. It seems the Cat's lives are running out and if the identity of his imitator is not discovered in time, he's going to take the fall. The revelation of the real thief isn't much of a surprise, but you won't really care. This is a lovely piece of romantic fluff full of eye-candy and chock full of enjoyment.
