BOTTOM LINE: Being a fan of comic books, I'm always intrigued to see how they are brought to from page to screen. I figured Singer, who made the X-Men so exciting, would be the perfect director to bring Superman back in a big way. I'm sorry to say I was wrong. This is not a horrible movie, it's just not a very interesting one. Routh is physically convincing as Superman/Clark Kent, but neither alter ago is developed into a character with any true depth. He's too busy saving the world and mooning after Lois to get any meaningful dialogue. Granted it's fun to see him fly and use his cool powers, yet all of it feels empty without getting to know something real about the man in the suit. I guess they figured everyone already knew enough to fill in their own blanks. Sure, we like Superman and nobody wants to see Lois hurt, however, the story plays out like a bad high school love triangle set admidst dangerous special effects. Bosworth tries to play a smart, successful mother, but the only thing she succeeds at is not hiding her love for Superman. Spacey makes the most of his turn as the egomaniacal Lex Luther, giving his scenes with his arch nemesis great bite, bitterness and humor. He saves this film from being truly boring. World domination is again the plan of the day, though it does come about with a bit of a twist. Overall, the film leaves more questions unanswered than it should to be satisfying. Superman deserves a better return than this. Let's hope the sequel gives it to him.
