It's sad to admit as a lover of film that I have never really been a big Bond fan. In fact, I've only ever seen the more recent Bond films with Timothy Dalton and Pierce Brosnan. Dalton I found boring and Brosnan though attractive is nothing more than window dressing for the special effects. Most people when asked which Bond they prefer respond with Sean Connery. After watching GOLDFINGER for the first time recently, I have to agree. Even without seeing any of his other Bond films, there's something dangerous and sexy about his portrayal that's sorely lacking in either of the others. Connery is more of a rough and tumble sort, not as sophisticated, and certainly seems to have a more upfront, in-your-face attitude in the role. And I have to say I liked it. No woman would ultimately be able to resist him and men were afraid to cross him. Of course, it was hard to take some of this film seriously due to AUSTIN POWERS. I had no idea how much of a parody Myers character truly was until watching GOLDFINGER.

I can't imagine there are many people out there who haven't seen this film, however for those of you who were as much in the dark about Bond as I was, I'll try to explain the plot. Not as complicated or convoluted as the more recent films, GOLDFINGER is pretty straightforward. Bond is assigned to watch Auric Goldfinger (Frobe), a wealthy businessman who deals with the gold trade. The company knows he's up to his eyeballs in dirty dealings, they just can't catch him actually doing anything wrong. Instead of lying low, Bond lets Goldfinger know that he's on his trail by stopping his latest scam and stealing his girlfriend. Goldfinger doesn't take to kindly to being screwed with and warns Bond that he's not afraid of him by killing the girl, painting her whole body with toxic gold paint. This pisses Bond off. He wasn't quite done with her yet. He is now more determined to take Goldfinger down. After putting himself in Goldfinger's way again, Bond is given a final warning from Oddjob, Goldfinger's massive and deadly bodyguard. Whatever he's planning, he's not about to let a secret agent, even James Bond, stop him. Bond follows Goldfinger to his secret lair and uncovers the mysterious plan. Instead of stealing all of the gold from Fort Knox, which would be virtually impossible, Goldfinger's going to detonate a nuclear bomb inside the vault and turn the gold radioactive, making his stash skyrocket in value.
